Cooler nights, cosy beds, decreased allergens, and an excuse for an extra warm cup of tea before bed are some of the reasons that autumn is the best season for catching some serious z’s. It’s cooler, but not cold.
The dropping mercury may invoke fears of ice, sleet and snow but it also means that for a few months, you can sleep with the windows open without concerns of overheating or freezing to death. Sleeping with the windows open allows air to circulate freely in your bedroom and helps your body cool down and settle into a restful slumber. This is a great time to consider investing in an all lovely wool blanket that will keep you cosy all night long. It Gets Darker Earlier
Finally, a reason to celebrate shorter days. With less daylight comes more prime sleep hours. It’s hard to get yourself motivated for bed when the sun is still shining but when it’s dark out, crawling into bed is downright irresistible. Take advantage of longer nights by powering down earlier than usual and aiming to hit the hay at an earlier hour than usual. Your mind and body will thank you and follow that up with an extra 30 minutes cosy time in bed.
It’s Prime Cosy Time
Autumn is the perfect time to snuggle up with a warm blanket and mug of tea which just so happens to be an excellent way to unwind before sleep. Engaging in soothing, pre-bed rituals helps prepare your body for sleep and allows you the chance to decompress before tucking yourself in for the night. Try taking a warm bath scented with soothing oils (lavender is a great option), drinking caffeine-free or herbal tea, curling up with a book with a beautiful rich candle, or engaging in an evening meditation session. What’s important is that you steer clear of tech devices in the hours just before bed as studies have shown that the light emitted from laptop and tablet screens can suppress the release of night-time melatonin, a critical hormone in your body’s circadian system, also known as our body clock.
It’s Hibernation Season
Animals all around you have started preparing for their long winter’s nap which seems like proof positive that autumn is prime sleeping time. As fluffies scurry around preparing for the months ahead, try to take their cue and use the changing seasons as an opportunity to slow down and focus on restorative rest.
You Can Finally Stop Sniffling
Summer is awesome, no doubt about it. Not so awesome? The allergies that seem to go hand in hand with the season. Pollen, mould, and dust all conspire to make life miserable for the allergy-prone among us. Usually, autumn means that we can finally take a break from the antihistamines, endless boxes of tissue, and eye drops and breathe easier. A benefit to this switch? Better sleep. It’s hard to sleep when you’re congested and uncomfortable so having clear airways goes a long way when it comes to getting a good night’s rest.
